On Monday, 16th September, 2024, week we launched You Are Your Own Person, a collection of memoirs written by our students in Years 5 and 6. This is the outcome of a fantastic project made possible through funds received from the State Government and a Creative Learning Partnership grant.
In Term 2, Nova Weetman, a widely published author for children and adults, worked with our Year 5/6 students, helping them to develop of a story with themselves as the main character. Under Nova’s enthusiastic and good-humoured guidance, students drafted, revised and edited a story.
The stories are wonderful: some are moving, others are funny, and some are very personal. Many stories involve roller coasters!
We launched the book at school, You Are Your Own Person. Many parents attended, as well as students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, Nova, and representatives from Creative Victoria. Our local member of parliament, Nathan Lambert came to the launch and spoke to our students about his job and the importance of stories. He read some of the stories afterward and was very impressed.
Some students read their stories at the launch with terrific confidence to the sizeable audience. Nova brought chips and chocolates for the Year 5/6 students who took home a copy of You Are Your Own Person.
In Term 4, we will repeat this process with our Year 3 and 4 students! That book will be launched in December.
