Grade 3/4 Area

The Grade 3/4 Area in 2009 comprises 4 classes: Tim Campbell (3/4T, Room 8), Maria Bovalino (3/4M, Room 9), Sandi Muntisov (3/4S, Room 11) and Colleen Mackenzie (3/4C, Room 13). All classrooms are in the South Block of the school and the Team Leader is Sandi Muntisov.

Expectations of our 3 /4 students:

Students and the teacher have the right to do as much work as possible.

Students and the teacher have the right to feel comfortable and safe in the classroom.

Parents and students are reminded of that these two statements are important for the classroom management in each 3/4 classroom. Students are encouraged to manage their behaviour according to these statements.

Uniform

Although it is Term 4, students are reminded that they need to be in correct uniform each day. Students are also required to wear a school hat in Term 4. Parents/Carers need to send a note if for some reason this is not possible and if the student is out of uniform. Uniform pieces such as jumpers, jackets and hats should be clearly named. Parents should ensure that their child wears suitable footwear to school each day so they can fully participate in physical activities. Kathy Jones has runs a second hand clothing shop. You can purchase a second hand windcheater for $5. This can only be done between 8:45 am and 9:00 am each day. Go to school office and ask for Kathy Jones. She will be happy to assist you.

Attendance

We are continuing to promote a high level of attendance throughout this term. The 34 area have had great success so far this year. The 3/4 Area Attendance celebration will be making ice-cream sundaes followed by a games session. This will be on Monday 14th December. This will only be available to students who have been at school every day in term 4 or only missed one day. Each month, the class with the highest attendance in the area will spend two sessions watching a G rated movie of their choice. We are also trying to be the area in the school with the best monthly attendance.

3 /4 happenings for Term 4:

Inquiry Learning and Literacy

The students have researched information about animals from various habitats and wrote Information reports about what they have learnt. Students were also exposed to transactional writing where they wrote a postcard from an animal habitat they have discovered over the weeks.

Spelling Bee

The annual Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday 19th November in the school hall. The students will be given an opportunity to practice their spelling words at home and then will be tested at school on some of these words. Class finalists will be chosen to represent their class on the day of the Spelling Bee.

Numeracy

The 3/4 Area are placing a huge focus on their multiplications facts over Term 4, along with many aspects of Mathematics. Term 4 presents a great opportunity for students in the 3/4 Area to consolidate the learning they've done throughout the year, and laying a solid foundation for work in the 5/6 Area. Students are working at applying their number skills to more complex problems and mathematical investigations. There will also be many mathematical processes to be explored through the construction work being undertaken at the front of the school.

Inquiry Learning

We got our knowledge reading for the Term 4 Inquiry unit by using a question grid (What? How? When? Who? What if? Why?) around the topic of Animal Habitats. We had a multitude of questions! Then students in each class became experts on a biome. (If you don’t know what that is, just ask one of the 3/4 students.)We found that lots of creatures are endangered or threatened because of humans’ altering their habitats. Off to the zoo we went to find out more! Now we are all become experts on one endangered or threatened animal. We want to know if WE can make a difference. What do you think?

Term 4 Excursions

81 students and 9 adults went to the Melbourne Zoo on the 30th October. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us and we walked around the zoo in steady light rain for most of the day. We got wet!! But this did not stop us enjoying the day. The lessons at the Zoo Discovery Centre were great. Students were able to touch many animals and learn more about animal habitats.

Grades 34T and 34S are off to the Essendon Traffic School on Tuesday 17th November. This has been rescheduled from 18th August due to wet weather. Let’s hope for a sunny day this time.

All 34 students will have the opportunity to go to the Movies on Tuesday 15th December. We will walk over to the Hoyts cinema and will watch ‘Cloudy with a Touch of Meatballs.’ Further details will be sent home during last week of November.

Homework

Students are expected to complete a task each week from their homework grid. Activities on the grid range from playing a board game to completing tasks related to animal habitats. Students are encouraged to learn spelling words from PNE Spelling Benchmark list and to learn their times tables.
