VISUAL ARTS: Everyone’s art is special. Everyone’s art is different.

Art is an essential part of a child’s education. As part of the whole development of the child it encourages creative language and social skills and produces something to wonder at and admire.

  • Visual Arts provides students with opportunities to explore, investigate, rearrange and experiment with their world.
  • Through Visual Arts children can represent their ideas, feelings and experiences.
  • Visual Arts gives them the opportunity to play with different tools, media and techniques as they experiment with different ways of representing their ideas.
  • Art encourages imagination and the ability to solve problems creatively.
  • Art encourages children to think critically and make evaluations.
  • Art encourages children to work in groups and appreciate different points of view.
  • Through art, students can investigate other worlds, both real and imaginary, the world of other artists and crafts people, and the worlds of different cultures.
  • These skills are well suited to our children becoming life -long learners able to meet the complex challenges of the global market place.

FOUNDATION

  • Foundation students will explore and develop skills associated with the language of visual arts, the use of mixed media, new techniques and an understanding of the basic elements, line, shape, colour, texture and tone. They talk about aspects of their own arts works, and arts works and events in their community.

LEVELS ONE and TWO

  • Students learn to make choices about different ways the arts elements can be used to communicate ideas, experiences, observations and things imagined in creative ways. They investigate the use of new skills, techniques, processes, media, materials and equipment. They begin to use arts language to discuss the similarities and differences in arts works and they learn about places where arts works can be found and how art can be designed and made to fulfil particular community needs.

LEVELS THREE and FOUR

  • Students select, combine and experiment with ways of using a range of arts elements, principles, conventions, skills, techniques and processes to explore arts ideas sourced from their imagination and from their own and other cultures.
  • Students consider the purpose and audience of their art as they experiment with various ways of presenting works in a range of art forms. They begin to refine and evaluate their work in response to feedback. As they explore the art work of others, students develop the Arts knowledge to be able to express emotions and ideas and signify purpose in their art work. By using the appropriate language they can reflect, identify, discuss and appreciate the key features of their own work and work from other cultures and the function of the Arts in their community.

LEVELS FIVE and SIX

  • Students experiment with imaginative and innovative ways of generating ideas and manipulating the arts elements to explore the potential of ideas. They gain inspiration from a broad range of sources, including arts works from different cultures, styles and historical contexts. Students research, improvise and practice skills, techniques and processes using a range of media, materials, technologies and equipment. They independently and collaboratively explore and experiment with different ways of presenting work. They evaluate the effectiveness of their arts works and make changes to realise intended aims. As they explore the art work of others, students develop the skills to be able to analyse, to interpret and compare key features, symbols and cultural characteristics of arts works in a range of contemporary and traditional forms from different historic, social and cultural contexts.
