Science

Humans love to wonder, imagine and question and this is the essence of Science. Learning about Science enables students to experience the excitement of scientific discovery and nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them. In doing this, students develop critical and creative thinking skills and challenge themselves to identify questions and draw evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods.

The framework for Science is based on the Australian Curriculum. Within this framework Science has 3 inter-related strands, Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. These 3 strands together provide students with understanding, knowledge, and skills through which they can develop a scientific view of the world.

Within each of these areas students explore Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences and Physical Sciences:

Biological Science looks at understanding living things.

Chemical Science is about understanding the composition and behaviour of substances.

Earth and Space Science looks at understanding the Earth’s dynamic structure and its place in the cosmos.

Physical Science is about understanding the nature of forces and motion, and matter and energy.

Students at Preston North East Primary School learn about Science through engaging Project Based Learning units of inquiry which include relevant excursions and incursions.
