Numeracy

At Preston North East we implement the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The school curriculum is be organised around the three core and interrelated strands of Physical, Personal and Social Learning, Discipline-based Learning and Interdisciplinary Learning. Mathematics is a major discipline based learning strand.

We acknowledge that mathematics is an integral part of daily life. We believe that given sufficient time and support, all of our students are capable of learning the mathematical ideas and skills that underpin everyday life.

We expect our students to:

•  acquire a range of mathematical skills and knowledge
•  be able to select and effectively apply concepts, facts, procedures and strategies
•  clearly communicate quantitative and logical ideas
•  recognise that mathematics is of fundamental importance to the functioning of society across cultures, through history and into the future

We aim to make mathematics a positive experience through which students develop confidence and consolidate knowledge in situations related to real life. We link learning to what they know and what they want to know.
The provision of an active learning environment for all students enables individuals to:

•  acquire basic number facts
•  develop computation and problem solving skills
•  investigate patterns, relationships and problems
•  participate in a wide variety of activities
•  have opportunities to experience, experiment and explore
•  be involved in both independent and co-operative work
•  experience Mathematics as interesting, relevant, enjoyable and challenging
•  reflect on their learning
•  utilise technology in their mathematics learning

100 Days of School

Children in the junior school keep track of the first 100 days of the school year. This provides a great focal point for creating and solving number stories, testing and checking and …On the 100th day we have a day of celebration.

Mathletics

The web based Mathletics program has proven extremely popular with students Prep-6 since 2008. Our students love using the program to practice their maths skills as well as stretch their brains with extension activities. Many of our students also enjoy using Mathletics from home.

Earn & Learn

The 5/6 classes program includes Earn and Learn in alternate years. This provides an engaging link to the real world of business.
