Information Technology
Information and Communication Technologies are actively used across all subject areas at Preston North East. All grades in the school have 4 desktop computers that students use throughout the day for a wide range of tasks. Information and Communication Technology has both a focus on skills as well as knowledge. Children work within their classrooms both on their own or in pairs/small groups using computers for such tasks as research, skill development and presentation of information. In addition to computers students at PNE also have the opportunity to use data projectors, scanners and digital cameras. As well as classroom use the school has a well equipped ICT Centre that is used for dedicated ICT focussed sessions throughout the week. All classes have one ICT session per week with a Specialist ICT teacher plus additional opportunities for class teachers to use the ICT Centre with their grade at other times. ICT sessions often focus on skill development in an area such as reading or maths or they may be utilised for publishing (with programs such as Microsoft Office, Powerpoint or Kahootz) or for investigations in Science or Inquiry Units. As part of PNE's ongoing development of ICT facilities within the school, 2008 saw the installation of interactive whiteboards in some classrooms in Grades 3-6. Teachers also received professional development on the use of Interactive Whiteboards through a Australian National Schools Network inititiative. In addition to this an interactive whiteboard and new computers were installed in the ICT Centre funded by a Federal Government "Improving our Schools" grant.
