Literacy
The English program at Preston North East Primary School uses the Victorian Essential Learning Standards as the core framework to inform literacy development. The Victorian Essential Learning Standards enable teachers, schools and parents to form a clear picture of student progress throughout the stages of learning from Years Prep – 6.
At Preston North East we believe literacy is the key to learning and success for all young people and it underpins future success. We use the Effective School’s model to guide our framework for developing an effective literacy program at Preston North East.
Preston North East regards the acquisition of strong literacy skills as essential. Literacy skills underpin success in all other learning. Students must learn to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking and listening.
The school’s literacy program in the early years focuses on teaching students how to read, write and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, and in the Middle Years of schooling we are teaching students to use these skills to build on their knowledge and develop their understanding. The school’s Early Years Literacy Program is a comprehensive and strategic approach designed to establish and accelerate achievement in reading, writing, speaking and listening. These skills are then expanded as students reach the Middle Years where literacy learning is developed across all curriculum areas, providing students with the best opportunities for their future.
The literacy program uses differentiated instruction through a range of instructional approaches incorporating whole class, small group, partner and individual work. The reading program teaches children at the point of need and incorporates explicit teaching. Instructional strategies used include language experience, guided reading, reciprocal teaching, shared reading, daily independent reading, reading to, and conferring with individual students. As participants of the NMR AiZ Project we are currently embedding Professor John Munro’s High Reliability Strategies within our curriculum to develop and improve students’ comprehension skills.
